Republic and Esen Shape Charlotte’s Future with Plaza Midwood Mixed-Use Development
The multifamily landscape in Charlotte, NC is poised for a transformative expansion as The Republic Family of Companies, through its Charlotte subsidiary Republic Development Group, partners with Esen to introduce a new mixed-use community in the historic Plaza Midwood neighborhood. Combining approximately 370 multifamily units with 3,000 square feet of ground-floor retail space, the development at 700 and 800 Central Avenue is a nod to the future that reverences the past.
Plaza Midwood’s charm is deeply rooted in its beginnings as Charlotte’s inaugural “streetcar suburb.” The 1903 streetcar line on Central Avenue stands as a testament to the neighborhood’s growth and resilience. With a planned construction commencement in mid-2026, the initiative is a substantial investment in one of Charlotte’s key cultural areas, promising to deliver a high-quality, walkable, and community-focused living experience.
Managing Director and Charlotte Lead for Republic, Adam McMichael, underscores the value of the project, “We are thrilled to bring a project of this caliber to Plaza Midwood, a neighborhood that offers historic charm within reach of Charlotte’s economic center. Charlotte’s demand for well-located, thoughtfully crafted housing continues to grow, and this project answers that need. For us, this is about more than building housing; it’s about welcoming new residents to one of the Southeast’s most desirable neighborhoods.”
Joining forces, Republic and Esen bring unique strengths to the table. Republic is a multifaceted organization led by Chairman Richard Kramer, including Republic Properties Corporation and Republic Urban Properties. Esen, on the other hand, is a recent initiative formed by experienced developers committed to creating urban developments with a purpose-driven design approach.
Dave Boillot, Chief Investment Officer of Esen, shared his enthusiasm for the collaborative endeavor, “This partnership between Republic and Esen reflects a shared belief in Charlotte’s future and a shared vision for this site. We are incredibly excited to enter the Charlotte market alongside a partner with Republic’s track record. We believe our Central Avenue project will set a new standard for living in Plaza Midwood.”
Both Republic and Esen are setting a precedent with their commitment to enhancing the vitality and desirability of the Plaza Midwood neighborhood. This project not only anticipates the needs of a growing Charlotte but also preserves the unique heritage that gives the area its singular appeal, ultimately contributing to the region’s economic and cultural prosperity.
