San Diego Launches Symphony at Del Sur to Enhance Affordable Housing Access

Improving accessibility to affordable housing remains a critical issue for many urban areas, and San Diego is making strides with the commencement of Symphony at Del Sur, a mixed-use, workforce housing community in the city’s Del Sur neighborhood. Affirmed Housing, in partnership with HP Investors, is spearheading the project to provide middle-income families and local workers with more attainable housing options close to their workplaces.

Symphony at Del Sur is a promising beacon of progress, expected to cater to households earning between 30 and 80 percent of the area’s median income. The development is planned to incorporate 171 apartment units alongside commercial retail space, which is anticipated to enliven the community with job opportunities and gathering spots such as a new restaurant.

The support from local government is evident, as highlighted by Mayor Todd Gloria’s commendation of the project. “This project demonstrates what’s possible when we come together to execute on a common goal – housing hardworking San Diegans,” Mayor Gloria stated. The city’s initiative to fast-track the permitting process for such ventures through the Affordable Housing Permit Now program has played a pivotal role in expediting the construction timeline for Symphony at Del Sur.

Through efficient collaboration with the city and the utilization of federal and state tax credits, as well as conventional permanent debt, this development is setting new standards for creating inclusive, sustainable communities. Affirmed Housing President Jimmy Silverwood aptly reflected the project’s ethos, noting, “Ensuring safe, high-quality housing for citizens at all income levels is paramount for cities’ health and prosperity, and the City of San Diego has been a consistent, reliable partner providing the tools necessary to deliver urgently needed housing resources quickly and efficiently.”

Symphony at Del Sur is not just about providing a roof over one’s head. It’s about creating a community with shared amenities such as activity centers, play areas, and access to services that enrich the lives of residents. The location within a high-resource area ensures that residents are well-connected to essential services like healthcare, grocery stores, and education.

The commencement of Symphony at Del Sur is a testament to what can be achieved when ingenuity meets opportunity. This innovative approach to multifamily housing addresses the pressing need for affordable living spaces, contributing to the vibrancy and resilience of the San Diego community. It’s a laudable example of how partnerships and forward-thinking policies can translate into tangible benefits for citizens at all levels of income, fostering a thriving, diverse urban environment.
